On April 30, 2025, May First, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Progressive Technology Project presented a webinar on legal threats to our hosted data in the United States.

Since Trump began his second term, we have all been scrambling to secure every aspect of our digital work. But what exactly is at risk? What kind of requests for data do we anticipate receiving? Does moving servers to another country make any difference? How should we prepare?

The goal of the webinar was to de-mystify the hype, cut through the fear and tell real stories from the past and present. We shared actual subpoenas (here and here) and a search warrant served on May First, discussed what we did in response (here and here and here) and what made our lives harder and easier. In addition, we heard from the Electronic Frontier Foundation about how these legal instruments (and others) work and what steps we can take now to defend ourselves.

Let’s explore how we can work together to defend ourselves and make our movement stronger.
